Keel Collection

Studio Production

The slot-leg system utilised in the Keel Series was a response to traditional Norwegian furniture and inspired by the drop-down keels in small sailboats. The initial pieces from Keel require the sand cast, iron legs to slot into routed holes in a wooden tabletop, locked in place by a wedge. A very satisfactory hands on way of assembling a piece of furniture with simple tools and little fixings resulting in sturdy pieces that, in a domestic situation, can be taken apart again either to move or repair- a luxury rare to find in much modern furniture. The bench inverts this relationship. Its iron legs provide housing for the two wooden, wedge shaped, planks that compose the seat. Fully durable, these works are equally easy to set up or knock down as many times as needed and provide an intelligent solution for flat pack shipping or storage in small spaces."

Michael Marriott on Keel Series Bench "By focusing on one of the most ancient engineering principles known to man, Narud has generated a series of forms that all feed off the nature of wedging. The finished objects hold some of that direct basic force found in machinery and equipment made during the industrial revolution, and with a similarly utilitarian vernacular."

RCA Design Products Collection

The Design Products Collection was an initiative by the Design Products department at the Royal College of Art (RCA), London. The works were selected by Professor at the time, Tord Boontje and former Senior tutor Gareth Williams. The commercial collection launched with an exhibition at the RCA during the London Design Festival 2010 and was over time intending to add subsequent editions to a growing Design Products Collection catalogue that has since been discontinued.

N.b these are no longer available through the RCA but can be commissioned  as studio works here
